Addiction Hates Perseverance

I gotta tell you, life is great with the right attitude. So much discouragement can come from temporary set-backs and perseverance can be the last thing on a person’s mind when this happens. If you don’t already have a persevering personality or have lost it because of set-backs then it could take some time to learn this most valuable character trait.

The number one thing to remember about perseverance is that if you continue to try despite failures then success is inevitable. It’s no longer a matter of “if” you will succeed but “when” you will succeed. Remember this and this will motivate you to get up off the ground and try again and again. Of course you want to study where you went wrong and try to do it differently or better or you’ll just repeat the same mistake.

I was reading the 10th Anniversary Special Edition of “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and came across many inspiring stories of perseverance in the face of seemingly impossible odds. I learned of some great people in our history that had many more failures than successes in terms of numbers until they were known as very successful people. Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, and myself are just some examples. Not that I am of the same notoriety of course 😉 Here are a couple other examples quoted directly from the book:

“Richard Hooker worked for seven years on his humorous war novel, M*A*S*H, only to have it rejected by twenty one publishers before Morrow decided to publish it. It became a runaway bestseller, spawning a blockbusting movie and a highly successful Television series.”

“After having lost both legs in an air crash, British fighter pilot Douglas Bader rejoined the British Royal Air Force with two artificial limbs. During World War II he was captured by the Germans three times – and three times he escaped.”

Its stories like these that can inspire all of us to keep going. You have a heart of fire whether you believe it or not. You have the ability to stand up and yell, “I will keep going, you’re not going to keep me down.” With this kind of attitude set-backs will be but a moment and you’ll be able to adjust your course and get back in the game.

You see, addiction and perseverance just don’t mix. You will eventually overcome any addiction, including porn addiction , with perseverance. It took me some time to learn this but once I did life wasn’t so bad anymore. It just gets better and better as you continue to try. You may think you have hit the point of no return but I will tell you that is a lie and don’t believe it. You are reading this and that shows you still have a desire to overcome your weaknesses. So long as you even have a desire to have a desire you will succeed. Sometimes we need someone to show us what we can’t see or have become blind to.

Trust me, I know perseverance. There was a year when I had a set-back almost every single day. I would fall asleep feeling like a failure but wake up determined to a new day determined to try again. I would turn the same song on as motivation on my way to work. I’ll never forget it, it was U2’s “New Year’s Day”. It was a good beat and fit my situation perfectly by repeating over and over “I will begin again”. So if you need some extra motivation try some motivating music like “Eye of the Tiger”. For those who don’t like the 80’s just listen to whatever motivates you to keep going 🙂 Just try not to listen to anything that makes you sad, angry, or any unhappy emotion as this can fuel the addiction.
